At 8 a.m. our guide will pick you up from your accommodation and you will depart from Marrakech to Zagora through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters (7,415 feet). This is the highest mountain pass in North Africa. There will be time to stop and enjoy the impressive landscape and isolated Berber hamlets. The meandering streams and small red adobe Berber villages hanging onto the slopes are an enchanting sight. After crossing the pass, we descend into the plains until we finally reach Ouarzazate, where we will have lunch in one of the local restaurants. Afterwards we will head to the Draa Valley and cross the Tizi N'Tnifift - the second pass of our journey, reaching an altitude of 1,710 meters (5,610 feet). This pass was part of a former caravan route for Saharan traders coming from "Timbuktu". We will follow the path of the ancient caravans into the Draa Valley, filled with palm groves and beautiful landscapes on our way to the desert town of Zagora. After we reach the camp we will have time to wander around the desert before watching the sunset, and will spend the evening in a Berber camp amidst the dunes where we will have a campfire and enjoy a traditional Moroccan feast. After dark you can relax outside and marvel at the stars and crystal-clear Milky Way like few people have seen them.

Zagora to Marrakech

At your request, our staff will wake you at the crack of dawn to witness the spectacle of the desert sunrise, the color of the sand contrasting beautifully with the palette of shadows on the dunes. After some light breakfast and tea we will ride the camels back across the desert to the Kasbah to freshen up before our journey North back towards the Draa Valley. We will stop along the way in Agdz or Ouarzazate for lunch over some fantastic mountain views, and participate in an optional fossil discovery workshop before resuming our journey to Marrakech.

Once we arrive in Marrakech, our guide will take you directly to your riad or hotel.

DAY 1: Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Agdz → Draa Valley → Zagora → Camel Ride and Overnight in a Nomadic Berber Fire-Camp

At 8 a.m. our guide will pick you up from your accommodation and you will depart from Marrakech to Zagora through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters (7,415 feet). This is the highest mountain pass in North Africa. There will be time to stop and enjoy the impressive landscape and isolated Berber hamlets. DAY 2: Zagora → Draa Valley → Agdez → Ouarzazate → Ait Benhaddou → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech

Wake up early for the sunrise before having breakfast and riding your camel back over the dunes to the vehicles. From the dunes we will depart for the Draa Valley and its oasis. On the way we will pass traditional villages which have stood for many generations. From there we will continue to Ouarzazate with plenty of stops along the way to take photos and marvel at the local landscape. In Ouarzazate we will visit the Kasbah Taourirt in downtown and the famous film studios. We will then continue across the territory of the powerful Glaoua tribe where a number of ancient kasbahs and fortified granaries can be seen dotting the landscape before we reach Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village classified by UNESCO as one of the world's cultural treasures. This kasbah, the most famous in Morocco, has been used as a backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters and was one of the most important fortresses on the old caravan routes of the Salt Road, on which traders transported slaves, gold, ivory, and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakech and  beyond. At Ait Benhaddou we will take a break to visit the kasbah and have lunch. From there, we will continue along the magnificent new road to Telouet Kasbah, which was once one of the greatest palaces in Morocco, but has since fell into ruin after the Lords of the Atlas, or the Glaoui clan, fled the country following the departure of the French. The road passes through various villages typical of the style of the northern slopes of the mountains where corn can be seen ripening in the sun on the packed earth roofs of stone houses. Our journey will continue towards Marrakech along the river, bordered by oleander and fruit trees, olive gardens, walnuts, pomegranates, apples, pears, and quince. Berber women and children can be seen tending goats and sheep and climbing the steepest slopes in search of firewood. We will reach Marrakech in late afternoon, where we will drop you off at your accommodation.
